The primary focus of the Business Development Manager is to maintain and grow current grower relationships, develop new grower relationships and to increase the procurement base through grower loyalty to meet the demands of the local and export markets of a range of sub-tropical fruit products.

Reporting to the Commercial Director, the incumbent will be required to lead and successfully coordinate procurement and relationship building activities of the commercial team working closely with the production planning, sourcing and quality assurance functions. While fostering an environment of performance excellence within the team, the Business Development Manager will be required to meet overall business objectives of product availability and quality, forecast accuracy and supply-demand management. The position will be Nelspruit based.


  • Deliver on the comprehensive long term strategy for business development, relationship building, procurement, supply chain and sales functions to support the group’s objectives, ensuring translation into actionable innovative plans that also exploit growth opportunities for market expansion in South Africa.
  • Build and manage cohesive relationships with growers based on the suite of services offered in the the company's value proposition.
  • Implement processes to continuously identify, analyse and convert new growers per region to grow all year avocado supply.
  • Deliver on and implement the collaborative planning process across the business, managing the supply-side interface to meet demand-side requirements, to ensure an integrated, transparent, and customer-centric plan.
  • Establish accurate forecasting based on historical statistics with procurement and industry data to manage supply to meet demand.
  • Understanding global market trends (pricing, supply, demand, exchange rate) to give economic steer to team and growers.
  • Support processes and controls to ensure consistent product quality is achieved.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with growers to implement best practices, meet customer expectations and optimise demand-side requirements.
  • Manage grower expectations to ensure optimal return on investment for grower.
  • Develop partnerships of loyalty and trust to ensure growers consider the company a partner of choice.
  • Develop and implement processes, metrics and goals that continually drive performance improvement to ensure long-term competitive returns for growers and the company, better grower service and increased grower loyalty.
  • Optimally monitor supply side planning to meet demand side requirements.


  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Agriculture, Procurement of Fresh Produce, Commerce, or similar is preferable.
  • 5 years’ experience at a management level in procurement with well-developed leadership skills in fresh produce procurement and relationship building.
  • Track record of developing and implementing successful procurement strategies that deliver step-changing business results.
  • Strong commercial and procurement acumen including understanding related business and financial records.
  • Knowledge of international trade requirements.
  • A confident and determined approach.
  • Team player aware of the cross functional nature of the business.
  • Resilient to aggressive competition and continuously changing market dynamics.

  • Willingness to travel both in South Africa and internationally.
  • Advanced practical knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint) is essential.
  • Experience in the sub-tropical fruit / fresh produce industry is required.
Salary Details:

A market-related remuneration package with commensurate benefits (Patterson D1)
